Determination of piglets’ rectal temperature and respiratory rate through skin surface temperature under climatic chamber conditions REA
Mostaço,Gustavo M.; Miranda,Késia O. da S; Condotta,Isabella C. F. da S; Salgado,Douglas D’Alessandro.
ABSTRACT In animal farming, an automatic and precise control of environmental conditions needs information from variables derived from the animals themselves, i.e. they act as biosensors. Rectal temperature (RT) and respiratory rate (RR) are good indicators of thermoregulation in pigs. Since there is a growing concern on animal welfare, the search for alternatives to measure RT has become even more necessary. This research aimed to identify the most adequate body surface areas, on nursery-phase pigs, to take temperature measurements that best represent the correlation of RT and RR. The main experiment was carried out in a climate chamber with five 30-day-old littermate female Landrace x Large White piglets. Temperature conditions inside chamber were varied...

Flamethrower Application Time in Weed Control1 Planta Daninha
FAVARATO,L.F.; SOUZA,J.L.; GUARÇONI,R.C.; BAHIENSE,D.V..
ABSTRACT In the organic system, one of the biggest obstacles faced by the farmer is the management and control of weeds. In this context, the use of heat treatment with fire may be seen as an interesting alternative, because of its characteristic of not leaving chemical residues in the soil and water. The objective was to evaluate the effect of the time of application of the flamethrower in weed control as compared to manual control and mechanical methods. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications and seven treatments, totaling 28 plots with dimensions of 1.0 x 1.0 m. The treatments consisted of five application times for the flamethrower (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 s m-2) and two types of weeding (manual and mechanical)....

HEAT-APPLICATOR MACHINE FOR WEED CONTROL REA
Spagnolo,Roger T.; Custódio,Tiago V.; Morais,César S. de; Reis,Ângelo V. dos; Machado,Antônio L. T..
ABSTRACT Pesticide environmental risks and increased weed resistance have encouraged studies for alternatives to herbicides. Among these are weed thermal control methods by controlled heat application machines. Thus, this study aimed to test a prototype of heat-applicator machine as a function of changes in gas pressure, travel speed, and tire traffic effect on plants. Then, three experimental factors were tested: gas pressure (98, 196, and 245 kPa), travel speed (0.56, 0.78, and 1.17 m s−1), and tire traffic effect on plants (with and without traffic). The results showed that tire traffic effect on plants and subsequent heat application had no effect on control rate. Weed control rates reached levels considered satisfactory using a heat application speed...
